The Death of Compassion
I believe social media is ingenious in its way in bringing out your inner “happy”, “perky”, “beautiful”, “luxurious” and what not.
You know what else it’s a master at bringing out?
The cruel.
We’ll look at people. See their happy faces. Get jealous. Or sad. Or confused as to what WE are doing with OUR lives. Or just, not have a reaction. Either way, one measly click, and you’re gone.
It’s not like you won’t be judged for portraying your “happy”. You will be. There will be tonnes of people questioning your need to show off your possessions and your loved ones to the rest of the world.
They’ll call you grandiose, they’ll call you pompous, they’ll simply say “Seriously, nobody cares, stop throwing your pictures in my face, bitch.”
Similarly, talk about a problem, and you’ve committed the biggest social faux-pas imaginable.
“Don’t you know this isn’t the place?
Does everybody NEED to know about your personal life?”
You’ll rarely get appreciated for trying to provide solutions.
You try talking about depression, and suddenly you garner reactions like “Oh, look at her. So depressed. First world problems :v ”,
Or, “Look at these privileged princesses thinking they have problems. Go a day without food, then talk.”
Congratulations. You understand there are bigger issues, man. You’re the first person to have ever thought of that too. And through this discovery, you’ve successfully eradicated the existence of these “non-problems.” And as such, they require no solution after all.
You know, there’s the person with the cancer, and the one with the jaundice. The jaundiced can go screw themselves, there are bigger diseases, dude :v The “real” diseases. All others fix themselves, and you’re a wannabe for calling attention to your lame-ass yellow face :v Go learn something about the real world, asshole :v
No matter what you do, you will be treated viciously by someone or the other. I don’t know where we’ve learnt this from, but we have.
The supposed greatest connector to humans everywhere has somehow sucked out all human empathy. It’s great and all, but, it’ll force thousands of people to lock themselves up inside a room, always afraid to speak out, in fear of shame, being ridiculed, being misunderstood for a wannabe, an attention-seeking creature.
Let’s just bring out our happiest pictures instead, and suffer in silence until we die, ’cause the world ain’t getting any easier :)
